Phonological Analysis IIIb: Phoneme counts in Saul's phrase Rob Zook Thu, 06 Nov 1997 11:25:36 -0600 Well the values seem much the same so I think we're on the right track with this: Vowels in the Vulcan Dictionary: i= 80 %=0,07 e= 57 %=0,05 ^= 0 %=0,00 a=177 %=0,16 o= 44 %=0,04 u= 22 %=0,02 ii= 3 %=0,07 ee= 2 %=0,05 ^^= 0 %=0,00 aa= 19 %=0,16 oo= 0 %=0,04 uu= 1 %=0,02 e~= 0 %=0,09 o~= 0 %=0,02 a~= 0 %=0,00 Vowels in Saul's phrase list: i= 80 %=0,09 e= 19 %=0,02 ^= 0 %=0,00 a=129 %=0,14 o= 63 %=0,07 u= 9 %=0,01 ii= 1 %=0,09 ee= 0 %=0,02 ^^= 0 %=0,00 aa= 29 %=0,14 oo= 0 %=0,07 uu= 0 %=0,01 e~= 0 %=0,09 o~= 0 %=0,04 a~= 0 %=0,01 So you can see the percentages generally stay in the same range, but some of the minor vowels come up a bit. Consonents in the Vulcan Dictionary: '=104 %=0,09 p= 17 %=0,02 b= 4 %=0,00 f= 7 %=0,01 v= 15 %=0,01 w= 10 %=0,01 m= 28 %=0,03 t= 64 %=0,06 d= 12 %=0,01 n= 58 %=0,05 c= 18 %=0,02 j= 6 %=0,01 s= 33 %=0,03 z= 1 %=0,00 k= 76 %=0,07 g= 2 %=0,00 x= 1 %=0,00 h= 17 %=0,02 q= 6 %=0,01 r= 96 %=0,09 l= 61 %=0,06 y= 8 %=0,01 rr= 3 %=0,01 kh= 18 %=0,01 wh= 1 %=0,01 th= 15 %=0,03 dh= 1 %=0,06 tc= 5 %=0,01 dj= 1 %=0,05 ng= 1 %=0,02 ny= 0 %=0,01 ts= 3 %=0,03 ks= 1 %=0,00 Consonants in Saul's phrase list: '= 82 %=0,09 p= 37 %=0,04 b= 12 %=0,01 f= 0 %=0,00 v= 0 %=0,00 w= 0 %=0,00 m= 23 %=0,03 t= 36 %=0,04 d= 1 %=0,00 n= 27 %=0,03 c= 2 %=0,00 j= 6 %=0,01 s= 36 %=0,04 z= 2 %=0,00 k= 76 %=0,09 g= 0 %=0,00 x= 9 %=0,01 h= 26 %=0,03 q= 22 %=0,02 r= 77 %=0,09 l= 34 %=0,04 y= 4 %=0,00 rr= 1 %=0,00 kh= 7 %=0,00 wh= 5 %=0,00 th= 20 %=0,03 dh= 0 %=0,04 tc= 0 %=0,00 dj= 3 %=0,03 ng= 11 %=0,00 ny= 0 %=0,01 ts= 2 %=0,04 ks= 3 %=0,00 Here we can see where some of the consonents in the dictionary overwhelm the rest - probably due to the small sample size in the dictionary. I definitely think that the second run seems more representative of the distribution of sounds. The bigger we can make the sample the more accurate our distribution will be. So, everyone please pour thru the dictionary and lexicon and come up with a phrase not in Sauls list, we can get better sample sizes. Several words in the dictionary did not show up in Saul's phrase list so we need to get some phrases with those words especially. Then as soon as we finish hashing out the phonemic constraints we can start building a vocabulary. Keep hope we're getting closer.
