VL - Sounding Vowels

Whenever I see 2 of the same vowels (eg. ii, oo, etc.), I think of it as a 
long vowel sound.  Eg. ii  would sound like "eye", oo would sound like 
"choose" and aa would sound like "eh".  But then again, I'm from 
Canada....,maybe that makes a difference.
